Now you are all probably thinking that you have heard this before.  Both Moffat and Smith said they would like to do an 8th series but until now there has been no word from the BBC. Now there is. Via the official Doctor Who website the BBC have confirmed that they have commissioned a new series which Steven Moffat is writing right now.  Here is the link to the BBC article:

So yes Series 8 is happening and will hit our screen next year.
